BRIEF HISTORY
Adams, Tennessee
The town, first called "Red River Station," was changed to "Adams Station" in honor of local merchant and railroad stockholder, Reuben Adams, when the first railroad depot and post office were built in 1859-1860. The town was first incorporated on November 10, 1869 and Adams Station became known simply as "Adams" on February 10, 1898. Located along what were the main railroad and highway thoroughfares between Nashville and Louisville for many years, Adams was a thriving town. Adams' best-known citizen is "Kate" (otherwise known as the "Bell Witch"). Small signs at the east and west city limits along Highway 41 say, "Welcome to Adams," and display a carved-out picture of a witch riding a broom. Coming into Adams from the east on Highway 41, the first landmark one will see is Bellwood Cemetery, situated on the right side of the highway.
Clarksville, Tennessee
Founded in 1784 and named for General George Rogers Clark, frontier fighter and Revolutionary War hero, Clarksville was established as a town in 1785 by the North Carolina Assembly. Tennessee was granted statehood in 1796 and Clarksville was incorporated as a town with elected officials in the year 1819. The original settlers in Clarksville engaged in tobacco shipping by way of the Cumberland River, and Clarksville quickly grew into a bustling merchant town. The glory days of tobacco have dimmed, but Clarksville has become a city of widely diverse economic and cultural dimensions. The city has rebuilt from a tornado in 1999 that destroyed much of downtown. A state-of-the-art Courts Center was built next to the restored historic county courthouse, helping to spark a rebirth of the city's core.
Fort Campbell, Kentucky
Both Kentucky and Tennessee were among the earliest states settled west of the Appalachians, and the local area has many interesting historical sites dating from the early days of settlement in the late 1700s, through the Civil War era to the present. The Fort itself was opened in 1942 and was named after William B. Campbell, a Tennessee statesman and Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers during the Civil War. Although nearly two-thirds of the 105,000 acres of post are actually in Tennessee, the post office is located in Kentucky, and the identification lies with that state. The 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles stationed at Fort Campbell are members of the only air assault division in the world, hence the designation 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). The designation indicates that the helicopter is the primary means of transportation for the division.

Adams is the home of the legend of the Bell Witch, and bluegrass lovers will want to attend the Bell Witch Bluegrass competitions, the second oldest bluegrass competition in Tennessee, in August at the old Bell School grounds. Adams also hosts an annual Fourth of July picnic and the Tennessee-Kentucky Threshermen's Show in mid-July. The Threshermen's Show includes antique tractors and farm equipment, arts and crafts booths, tractor and mule pulls, pony rides, square dances, and other family activities. The bottomland terrain is mostly flat, full of large corn and tobacco fields, surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills.
